West Yorkshire has become a hot spot for enterprising criminals making and selling supposedly “new” mattresses which are in fact old mattresses (which could have just been fly tipped by their previous owners) which have had a little bit of extra stuffing and a new cover to make them appear new.
These “new” mattresses are often sold from the back of a van by rogue traders looking to take advantage of people who can’t afford to buy from high street stores, or even those who are tempted by the “massive reductions” from the inflated fake RRP tag. According to the National Bed Federation (NBF), these traders even go so far as to sell from vehicles that have the logos of reputable companies, making them appear genuine.
DC Waste have had a really busy few weeks. With several more retailers signing up for our carpet recycling services. This week we sent another 17 pallets of rubber and foam underlay for recycling at Ball & Young – almost a full load…next time…! January 2014 has been really busy for us, it seems that retailers are getting the idea that skip hire is an expensive means of disposing of their waste, with several skip hire companies actually refusing to take on carpet shops, due to carpets being an expensive and difficult material to dispose of.
DC Waste have had a busy few months, with two new members signing up to our carpet recycling scheme in just the last week. We are looking forward to working with MC Carpets, Armley and Homestyle Carpets and Flooring in Beeston, helping them reduce the amount of carpet going to landfill and improve their service for their customers.
A total of 9 tonnes of carpet have now been recycled through our collection scheme, this figure is continuing to rise month on month.

Kirklees have begun a new initiative – Streetbikes. This project is aimed at getting young people involved in the community, they are taught to repair and maintain bikes sourced for free from rubbish collections and from West Yorkshire Police, who seize suspected stolen bikes but cannot find the owner.
Trained mechanics will run courses to enable young people to gain qualifications in basic skills.
The scheme aims to repair 20 bikes per month.
Council refuse teams are being asked to salvage bikes that are being dumped at recycling centres and tips so that the parts can be used in the scheme.
