17 pallets of underlay to be recycled!

carpet underlay, recycling

DC Waste have had a really busy few weeks. With several more retailers signing up for our carpet recycling services. This week we sent another 17 pallets of rubber and foam underlay for recycling at Ball & Young – almost a full load…next time…! January 2014 has been really busy for us, it seems that retailers are getting the idea that skip hire is an expensive means of disposing of their waste, with several skip hire companies actually refusing to take on carpet shops, due to carpets being an expensive and difficult material to dispose of.

Carpet recycling collections take off in 2013

At the end of 2012, DC Waste started a carpet recycling collection scheme, aimed at local carpet retailers who wanted to do something about the amount of carpet they were putting in their skip (Big rolls of uplifted carpet take up lots of space when they don’t fit properly in the skip, which limits the amount of waste they could dispose of per skip). Since the launch of the carpet recycling scheme in November 2012, we’ve had plenty of interest.

So, a quick update. In the two short months since the beginnings of the scheme towards the end of November 2012, we had collected 1.7 tonnes of waste carpet. Not bad for a new scheme.

Carpet recycling scheme featured!

DC Waste’s new carpet recycling scheme has received some attention from industry news websites! So far we have been featured in an article in Recycling, Construction and Demolition Magazine and briefly mentioned on LetsRecycle.com. You can read the full article on HUB4 here.

Since November, we’ve been busy streamlining the carpet recycling scheme and finding reputable recyclers for carpet and other flooring wastes returned to us.

These junk items were cleared from the Abundant Life Church in Leeds due to their moving on to a bigger and better venue. DC Waste cleared three van loads from their old venue, recycling or reusing where ever possible.

Fines for non-licensed waste carriers, are you registered?

Enforcement officers from the Environment Agency are cracking down on people who aren’t authorised to carry waste. Under the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011, anyone who carries waste must be registered as a licensed waste carrier.

People who often get caught out include tradesmen such as builders, plumbers, joiners taking waste materials from a job back to their premises to be disposed of into a skip.

Some examples of wastes from construction / demolition works include:

Kirklees plans bike recycling scheme

Kirklees have begun a new initiative – Streetbikes. This project is aimed at getting young people involved in the community, they are taught to repair and maintain bikes sourced for free from rubbish collections and from West Yorkshire Police, who seize suspected stolen bikes but cannot find the owner.

Trained mechanics will run courses to enable young people to gain qualifications in basic skills.

The scheme aims to repair 20 bikes per month.

Council refuse teams are being asked to salvage bikes that are being dumped at recycling centres and tips so that the parts can be used in the scheme.
