Kirklees residents are being told there is a six week wait time before their bulky waste can be collected.
In 2014, Kirklees council received over 30,000 requests for bulky waste collections.
A spokesman for the council said: “It is true that due to staff shortages and our prioritising resources to ensure the regular domestic waste collection schedules are maintained, that there are delays in bulky item collections and they are taking much longer than we would like.
“We have put messages on the website and on the phone lines advising people of the delay and advising of alternative means of disposing of such items, for example contacting charity collectors or taking them to the nearest household waste recycling centre.”
Unfortunately, local charities are overflowing with furniture and there is more supply than demand. This has led to charities becoming more selective in what they choose to accept. Charities have also been seen to become a “free tip” for residents hoping to pass on unwanted furniture that isn’t really usable any more, often broken or badly stained / torn.
This has led to concerns over the rubbish being fly tipped. Already, the council receives over 250 reports of fly tipping a month, ranging from a few bags to a whole van load of waste.
Of course, the council tries to identify the people responsible but there is often little evidence to be found. The usual places for dumping rubbish are often places out of the way and not covered by CCTV which limits the council’s ability to track any vehicles involved.
