DC Waste have had a really busy few weeks. With several more retailers signing up for our carpet recycling services. This week we sent another 17 pallets of rubber and foam underlay for recycling at Ball & Young – almost a full load…next time…! January 2014 has been really busy for us, it seems that retailers are getting the idea that skip hire is an expensive means of disposing of their waste, with several skip hire companies actually refusing to take on carpet shops, due to carpets being an expensive and difficult material to dispose of.
Carpet recycling in the UK is really turning a corner with Carpet Recycling UK announcing that they have reached their landfill diversion target of 25% by 2015 two years early, the majority of the diverted carpets (over 63,000 tonnes) went to energy from waste, 43,000 tonnes was recycled into new products and around 1,000 tonnes was re-used (this was mainly carpet tiles).
One of the primary reasons why the majority of carpets went to energy from waste may be because the vast majority of carpet retailers still use skip hire for their waste disposal. Once the carpets get wet and contaminated they can not easily be recycled into new products and therefore the only viable outlet for them is EFW. This probably also applies to the 200 household waste recycling centres that have begun accepting carpets from households in 2013.
DC Waste offer a flexible recycling service for carpet retailers – cheaper than skip hire and a friendly, more reliable service. Give us a call on 0800 023 5797 or 07870 459 737 to find out more!
