DC Waste expands into sampling trials with Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority

DC Waste have recently been involved in recycling trials with the Merseyside Waste Recycling Authority (MWRA).

MWRA wanted to know how well residents are recycling by measuring the amount of recyclables found in their general waste bins and recycling containers. DC Waste were tasked with sampling all of the different waste bins – general, recycling, green waste and food waste recycling from many different streets around Merseyside and bringing the samples back to a central sorting facility for analysis.

We were given a list of streets and a number of bin samples to take from each street. Each street was picked according to its demographic, allowing different areas around Merseyside to be compared.

Residents weren’t told in advance that we would be sampling their waste so we had quite a few inquiries from people asking what we were doing and where the regular bin men were!

Occasionally the schedule meant that we were often emptying bins just before the bin crew arrived on the same street to empty any remaining bins not sampled.

Once we had collected all of the required samples or filled the van with as many samples as possible we returned to the sort site to drop them off.

At the sort site in Huyton, a team of temp staff along with consultants from Axion Consulting worked on sorting each sample into the different material categories. They took the weights of each type of material and calculated the composition of the sample. This will then allow MWRA to assess how well residents in the Mersey area are separating their wastes and should inform the authority on how best to educate residents on recycling.

This sampling period lasted for 3 weeks and will be repeated again in February to see how the material composition may have changed between seasons.
